According to the Ministry of Health, there is a deficit of 200,000 doctors in the country, of which 77,000 are specialists.
Although there are many young people who want to continue with their professional preparation, the biggest barrier they face is the ENARM.
While in 2019 there were 9,876 places for residents, by 2024 the figure is expected to be 23,000.

It is not a secret that Mexico requires more health professionals. In fact, the authorities themselves acknowledge that there is a deficit of 77,000 specialists throughout the national territory. With this in mind, a new commitment that has been made is increase the places for residents and in this way allow more young people to continue with their professional preparation.

With this in mind, one of the big problems is that there are not enough hospitals to house the training specialists. One of the first steps that is required is to build more hospitals and adapt the current ones so that they can receive more residents.

Due to the above, some consider that the National Examination of Applicants for Medical Residencies (ENARM) it is a filter and not a test of knowledge. Every year there are thousands of rejected and even some get high scores but it’s not enough.

More places for residents

Based on all of the above, work begins next week between the Ministry of Health (SSa) and a higher education institution, with the purpose that the High Specialty Hospital of Veracruz (HAEV) train subspecialists in pediatric oncology and pediatric hematology. This was announced by the owner of the General Directorate of Quality and Health Education (DGCES)Jose Luis Garcia Ceja.

The work for the opening of the medical residence is part of the commitments made by SSa authorities with mothers and fathers of girls and boys with cancer, with the purpose that the hospital has the subspecialists in pediatric oncology that it requires.

The head of the DGCES indicated that the number of places for residents has been increasing, go from 9,876 in 2019 to 20,000 between 2021 and 2022. While now it is expected to reach 23 thousand at the end of the six-year term.

In 2019, the country had 135 subspecialists in pediatric oncology. Instead, there are currently 145.

Analysis of the new study plan

The general director of Quality and Education in Health reported that in October the project will be available, which includes diagnosis, study plan and teaching headquarters, which would allow HAEV to open the call for subspecialties in pediatric oncology and pediatric hematology.

In this regard, the Undersecretary for Integration and Development of the Health Sector of the Ministry of Health, Juan Antonio Ferrer Aguilar, said that the residents who entered the new places in 2020 will graduate one year after the end of the current federal administration.
