Announced retirement after the end of the season… Will be on the bench after the Hanwha match on the 10th
Where will the final stage be for Choo Shin-soo (42, SSG Landers), who is about to break up?
Choo Shin-soo, who is suffering from a shoulder injury, has not played in a game since the game against Hanwha Eagles on the 10th (no hits in 4 at-bats).
As time passes by, the end of the season is approaching. This means that our farewell with Choo Shin-soo is drawing near.
Last December, Choo Shin-soo announced through his team that he planned to end his professional career and retire after the 2024 season.
This year, which he started early with the determination to call it his ‘last season’, is not easy. With multiple injuries, it is difficult to even get a chance to burn the last flame. He suffered a right ring finger injury in the Lotte Giants game on March 23, the opening game of the regular season, and was excluded from the first team in May after being diagnosed with a right rotator cuff injury.
Even though the end of the season is approaching, Choo Shin-soo’s body is still not 100%.
Having not played in a game for over ten days, he is playing the role of a veteran who cheers on the younger players from the bench and injects energy into the team. Although it is not the finale that was expected, he is quietly holding his place.
After graduating from high school, Choo Shin-soo went straight to the United States and played in the minor leagues before entering the major leagues in 2005 wearing the Seattle Mariners uniform.
After that, he played for the Cleveland Guardians, Cincinnati Reds, and Texas Rangers, and recorded a batting average of 0.275, 218 home runs, 782 RBIs, 961 runs, and 157 stolen bases in 1,652 games in the major league. In 2018, he was selected as an All-Star, the first Korean pitcher.
He finished his major league career at the end of 2020 and opened a new page in his baseball life by wearing the SSG Landers uniform in 2021. In 2022, his second year in the KBO League, he led the team to a comprehensive championship and stood at the top.
Despite his ups and downs due to injuries this year, Choo Shin-soo has left a significant mark on the KBO League.
On August 3rd, he hit a home run against the Samsung Lions, becoming the oldest player to hit a home run in the KBO League at the age of 42 years and 21 days, surpassing Felix Jose (Lotte Giants, 42 years and 8 days) in 2007. The next day, he broke his own record again by sending the ball over the fence against Samsung.
With 4 regular season games left, SSG is still locked in a ‘competition for 5th place’ where the future is uncertain.
If SSG dramatically wins a ticket to the postseason, Choo Shin-soo can also finish more meaningfully. First, SSG manager Lee Soong-yong announced that he will definitely let Choo Shin-soo have one at-bat in the last home game of the season against Kiwoom Heroes on the 30th.
Meanwhile, Choo Shin-soo’s retirement ceremony is scheduled to be held next year. The decision was made to postpone the ceremony to next year so that the team can focus on advancing to the fall baseball league.
