BOLZANO. 31 years after the original CliffhangerRenny Herlin’s high-altitude action movie set in the Rocky Mountains, which grossed over $255 million worldwide, Sylvester Stallone he will reprise the role of mountaineer Gabe Walker for the sequel directed by Jean-Francois Richet which will take the star to Alto Adige, for a story set in the Dolomites.
The film, which has the provisional title Cliffhanger 2, is among the 11 projects (seven come from Italy, three from Germany and one from Austria) supported by IDM Film Commission Sudtirol. In the story we will find Gabe Walker, manager, together with his daughter Sydney, of an exclusive mountain chalet. The arrival of a billionaire client will lead Gabe and Sydney, along with his younger sister Naomi, on a dangerous journey in which they will fall into the clutches of a gang of unscrupulous kidnappers. The film is produced by Supernix Austria, Supernix Germany and Rocket Science Cliffhanger in London.
According to the news already circulating about the film, the filming they could start this summer for a 2025 release. Jean-Francois Richet, winner of the Cesar for best director in 2009 with Public Enemy No. 1 – The Hour of Escape with Vincent Cassel, about the true story of the French gangster Jacques Mesrine and director, among others, of thrillers such as Blood Father ( 2016) with Mel Gibson and The Plane (2023) with Gerard Butler, he will direct the sequel to Clffhanger in place of Roman Waugh, who was initially attached to the project. Stallone hinted at the sequel in an interview with Radiotimes: “I expect it to produce a lot of good entertainment. The first film turned out to be sensational,” he explained. Obviously, given his age, in the sequel “I’m not hanging as high as I would like,” but the character “holds the flag high. And the script (the script was fantastic. I was really impressed.”
Other projects financed by the Idm include Woodwalkers 2, a fantasy film by German director Sven Unterwaldt and the documentary Kampf Gegen Die ‘Ndrangheta by Stefano Strocchi on the history of the European fight against the ‘Ndrangheta from the mid-1990s to today.
