José Ramón García, deputy director of postgraduate studies at the Central University of Venezuela, explained that postgraduate medical degrees have different periods in different universities in the country and that it is planned to unify them.
Caracas. “The information shown in the document is part of an approach that is, so far, not definitive“stated José Ramón García, deputy director of postgraduate from the Central University of Venezuela (UCV), in reference to the images released through social networks, which show the the new agreements of the medical schools from several universities in the country.
The spread of part of the document shows the changes throughout duration of postgraduate periods.
“Postgraduate degrees have different durations at different universities. For example, the Pediatric Surgery postgraduate degree at the UCV is three years, but in Maracaibo it is five years. So we are trying to agree“Garcia said.
In that sense, he pointed out that most programs last four years, but others have priority. “This means that in order to do a postgraduate degree in Cardiology you must first have training in Internal Medicine.“.

Gacía argued that the decision regarding the years was a vision of all the universitiesbut it is not definitive because it must be discussed with the Venezuelan Medical Federation, the networks of scientific societies, the aid organizations of the national health system (Social Security and the Ministry of Health) and the technical table of the University Sector Planning Office (WHEN), as well as the National Universities Council.
“All these entities need to give their opinion to reach an agreement and say: the postgraduate degrees of all universities last that long. But that takes time for all of us to have a similar curriculum that allows us to be at par with international standards.“.
New agreements
García mentioned that representatives of the National Council of Graduate Directors and Coordinators of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences are participating in the discussion, providing their advice. to establish the parameters of the agreements.
Graduate representatives from various higher education centers attend the meetings such as the Universidad de los Andes, the Universidad Centro Occidental Lisandro Alvarado, Universidad del Zulia, Universidad Nacional Experimental Francisco de Miranda, Universidad de Oriente and the UCV.
“We have tried to standardize the scale of all universities and ensure that it has similar characteristics in all of them. Previously, different things were asked in each of them“he explained.
Apart from the duration of each postgraduate degreethe dates of the examinations, which were different in each house of study, were discussed.
“The previous exam was held on a Saturday at one university, then another Saturday at another university, resulting in two candidates competing at two universities at the same time.“García revealed.

International equality
“Seen coming, because of the hospital crisis, more time is needed to fulfill surgical records and maintain quality“says one of the messages responding to the publication on social networks, regarding the duration of postgraduate medical degrees.
García replies that the approach is wrong because the idea is not to keep them for more years than they need, but to students are trained and that they succeed during their teaching and care practices within hospitals in acquiring sufficient skills and tools for their work performance.
The intention is to extend the period for the postgraduate degree to be recognized abroad, in the event that his specialization is not taken into account if the doctor does not comply with the times of that country.
Regarding the document published on social networks, he pointed out that they will publish a new one with other points: That one that came out, we do not know who did it or how it was done. I can say that it is a working paper that needs to be discussed so that postgraduates have the same guidelines.
He clarified that post-graduate times in all universities will remain the same until the discussion ends.
