Grand Slam record holder and Paris 2024 Olympic champion Novak Djokovic believes there are many problems in the doping control system in tennis. The Serbian said this, commenting on the case of the world’s first racket Janik Siner, at a press conference before the start of the US Open Championship.
As is known, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) reported that Siner had given two positive doping tests during the tournament of the “Masters” series in Indian Wells (USA) in March. The Italian escaped punishment by only being stripped of ranking points and the amount of money won in that tournament.
“I understand the players are frustrated with the lack of consistency. I understand his case was closed the moment it was announced. But it’s been five or six months since the news of the positive doping tests reached him and his team. So that, yes, there are many problems in the system, we see a lack of standards and clear actions. I understand the feelings of many players who doubt that they have been treated equally,” said Djokovic.
The Serbian also said he can’t wait to continue making history as he begins the defense of his US Open title just three weeks after his gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
Djokovic is aiming to win a record 25th Grand Slam and become the first New York champion to successfully defend his trophy since Swiss great Roger Federer in 2008.
