Earlier in the season, Daniel Cardenas and Hunter Garvin competed at the NWCA All-Star Classic at Rutgers University. Garvin emerged victorious at 165 pounds, defeating Lehigh’s Max Brignola 4-1, while Cardenas narrowly lost a sudden-victory match to west Virginia’s Ty Watters at 157 pounds.

Building on a Strong Foundation

Stanford’s wrestling program has demonstrated consistent growth, achieving a top 20 finish at the NCAA Championships last season. Despite facing the challenge of not having a wrestler compete at 125 pounds throughout the 2024-25 season, the Cardinal posted a 10-5 overall record and a 2-4 mark in ACC duals. They finished fifth at the inaugural ACC Championships in Durham,North Carolina, with Hunter garvin (165) and Nick Voiced (197) earning All-ACC honors. Garvin notably captured the 165-pound title, becoming Stanford’s first individual ACC champion.

The program’s success extends to the national stage, qualifying eight wrestlers for the NCAA Championships in Philadelphia. Stanford finished 18th as a team and secured multiple All-American honors for the second consecutive year – a feat achieved in five of the last six seasons.

Hunter Garvin’s sixth-place finish at 165 pounds at the NCAA Championships marked his second consecutive All-American honor, making him the seventh multiple-time All-American in program history. Tyler Knox also distinguished himself as a freshman, battling through the consolation bracket to finish eighth at 133 pounds and becoming the fourth freshman NCAA All-american in Stanford’s history.

In a historic achievement, Stanford won the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships team title in 2024, claiming three individual crowns. Tyler Knox (133), Jaden Abas (149), and Lorenzo Norman (174) were the first Stanford individuals to win Midlands titles as 2012. Knox was recognized as the Dan Gable Most Outstanding Wrestler, and Norman received the Jack Leese Champion of Champions award.

Leadership and future Outlook

Stanford wrestling is led by Chris ayres, the Matt Gentry Head Wrestling Coach, who is in his third season with the program and his 20th as a collegiate head coach. Ayres brings a wealth of experience, having previously served as a four-time Ivy League Coach of the Year during his 17 seasons at Princeton University. His leadership is poised to continue the Cardinal’s upward trajectory as they compete in Las Vegas and beyond.
