From Mainz’s perspective, a club icon is watching the game against Werder Bremen: Jürgen Klopp is visiting his former club – and is being celebrated by the fans.
Star coach Jürgen Klopp has returned to his old stomping ground in Mainz as a spectator for the Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen. The 57-year-old was greeted by the football fans of FSV Mainz 05 with chants of “Jürgen, Jürgen, Jürgen”. According to his former club, Klopp came to the stadium with his family. “Special lucky charm here today,” wrote the FSV on the X platform.
Klopp shaped an era at FSV. He was head coach of the Rhineland-Palatinate team from 2001 to 2008. Under Klopp as coach, Mainz managed to gain promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in 2004, before he later moved on to Borussia Dortmund (until 2015) and then to Liverpool FC. After leaving the top English club after nine years, the former player has been without a club since the summer, having previously stated that he wanted to take at least a year off. After leaving Liverpool, Klopp is instead making the most of his new freedom. He attended a Taylor Swift concert in Anfield, attended European Championship games in his home country and visited the Paralympics.
The visit to Mainz is not the first time “Kloppo” has returned to a former club: only last week, Klopp was back on the sidelines at BVB, coaching at the farewell game of club legends Jakub Blaszczykowski and Lukasz Piszczek.
“I’m working, but not as much as I used to. I’m not just doing nothing, but sometimes I am. I don’t miss anything,” Klopp said afterwards and assured that “zero, zero, zero” was tickling, he said. “It’s great fun that way, where it doesn’t matter at all – that’s great.”
