Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has congratulated Labour Party leader Keir Starmer on taking office as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

“I am confident that we will continue to work together to strengthen the historic friendship between the UK and Israel and advance the twin goals of security and peace,” Netanyahu wrote on Twitter, eight hours after President Isaac Herzog issued his own congratulatory message.

“I also express my gratitude to (former British Prime Minister) Rishi Sunak for his friendship and support over the years,” Netanyahu added.

Earlier today, Keir Starmer stepped into Downing Street for the first time as UK Prime Minister, promising to take urgent action to restore the country’s prosperity.

The Labour leader won a landslide victory in Thursday’s general election, ending 14 years of Conservative rule.

“The work of transformation begins immediately,” Starmer told reporters in Downing Street.

“But make no mistake, we will rebuild Britain,” he added.

Starmer, a 61-year-old former human rights lawyer and chief prosecutor, paid tribute to Sunak, who was appointed Tory leader and prime minister in October 2022 following Liz Truss’s disastrous tenure.

“His achievements as our country’s first British Asian prime minister, and the extra effort it took to make that happen, should not be underestimated by anyone,” he said.

“Today we pay tribute to that. We also recognize the dedication and hard work that he brought to his leadership,” he added.
