INFOGRAPHICS – The major works have just begun and will be completed in 2030. The commissioning of the Seine-Escaut Canal, a link to the northern European river network, should relieve the road of millions of trucks.

The Seine-Nord canal is a pharaonic project which should make it possible to link the Seine to the river network of northern Europe by 2028. The program, the cost of which is estimated at five billion euros, will also be financed by the European Union and local authorities to the tune of two billion euros each. This canal should facilitate the transport of goods between the Benelux countries and the Paris region, and relieve the A1 motorway of 500,000 trucks per year.

After years of dithering, work on the future Seine-Nord Europe canal has just begun and should last almost a decade. A colossal 107 km project between Compiègne and Aubencheul-au-Bac which, crossing 4 departments and 64 municipalities, will link the Seine basin, via the Scheldt, to the dense navigable network of northern Europe. Paris, Rouen, Le Havre will be connected to Brussels, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Rotterdam… It will be deployed on a parallel route…
