BarcelonaBarça enters an unknown dimension for the vast majority of its social mass this summer. The reason: the exile to the Montjuïc Olympic Stadium, an inevitable remedy so that the Camp Nou can radically change its face and catch up with the most modern stadiums in Europe. Arístides Maillol’s coliseum closed its doors a few weeks ago with a game against Mallorca in which the youngster Gavi scored the last goal before the transfer. The Andalusian, who is only 19 years old, is also called to make history in the new Barcelona home, which Joan Laporta hopes to inaugurate, with part of the work still to be done, before the end of 2024, coinciding with the celebration events of the institution’s 125th anniversary.
But there are still months before the ribbon can be cut. In fact, these days, the process is just beginning its initial stage with the total demolition of the third tier, which will be built anew by virtue of the rectification of the project initiated by the Laporta board. The image of the cranes pulling down the pillars, buttresses and entrances glimpses a better future, but at the same time it represents a hard blow in the present for the witnesses of so many nights of Blaugrana glory.
According to the forecast of Barça and Limak, the Turkish construction company that won the competition for the remodeling of the Camp Nou, the demolition work on the third stand will progress throughout the summer together “with the movement of earth, retaining walls and perimeter screens and foundations for the construction of the vessel that is developed in the plants below ground level in view of the subsequent execution of the main work”. At the same time, the club’s executives are working with the City Council to approve the section of the building permit that allows the new stadium to be built on top of the structure of the old one. Until this procedure is approved, most of the work cannot be carried out.
