On the afternoon of the 12th, amid concerns over a Chuseok holiday emergency room chaos, a notice regarding normal operation of emergency medical centers during the Chuseok holiday was posted at a university hospital in Seoul. The government will operate a ‘Chuseok Holiday Emergency Response Week’ for two weeks until the 25th to respond so that there is no medical gap. 2024.09.12.[서울=뉴시스]

Ahead of the Chuseok holiday, the patient burden rate for emergency room use by non-emergency and mild patients has increased significantly.

According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare on the 13th, a partial revision of the Enforcement Decree of the National Health Insurance Act containing these contents went into effect on that day.

Accordingly, if a mild patient uses a regional emergency medical center, regional trauma center, or local emergency medical center based on the emergency patient severity classification criteria, the patient’s share of emergency room treatment costs will increase from the current 50-60% to 90%.

Regarding the reason for the revision, he said, “It is to prevent overcrowding in emergency rooms and to efficiently utilize limited medical resources so that critically ill emergency patients can receive timely treatment.”

The Ministry of Health and Welfare previously decided to increase the patient burden rate in order to minimize the use of emergency rooms by mildly ill patients and to strengthen the emergency medical care system, including emergency medical care during the Chuseok holiday.

At a briefing on emergency medical care and other emergency treatment responses held on the 11th, the Director of Public Health Policy at the Ministry of Health and Welfare Jeong Tong-ryeong stated, “On average, patients who go to regional emergency medical centers will have to pay an average of 130,000 won, but this will now increase to around 220,000 won, an average increase of 90,000 won in their own burden.”

He continued, “People who visit local emergency medical centers used to have to pay around 60,000 won, but now they have to pay around 100,000 won, so the cost may increase by around 40,000 won.”
