Because of Covid 19, far too little blood is being donated. Now blood is running out in Austria. That’s why the Graz startup Probando, together with the Red Cross, is calling for blood donations: “Startups donate blood” is the name of the campaign that will take place on December 7th, 12 to 2 p.m.

The aim is for other start-ups to join the campaign and for company employees to donate the much-needed blood. The Red Cross is available in Unicorn, the start-up hub of the University of Graz, to bleed donors. In order to avoid long waiting times, it makes sense to register for a donation. Behind the campaign is Natalie Maier, Junior Marketing Manager at Probando, who wants to use the campaign to create added value for society.

“Basically, the idea behind it is that startups mostly focus their energy on things to create solutions to challenges. Now it is the case in Austria that due to Covid, fewer people are donating blood and donors are urgently neededto be searched inside. That’s why we launched the ‘Startups donate blood’ campaign. More than 15 startups and organizations are now supporting us, and the number is growing every day,” says Maier. The Red Cross was immediately willing to implement the campaign together with Probando, because donor blood is urgently needed in the hospitals. A blood unit is needed every 90 seconds, but only 3.5 percent of all Austriansinside donate blood – and currently less.

The lack of blood makes the situation in the intensive care units even more difficult in the current corona emergency. “When we found out about this, we immediately decided to help and launched the campaign,” says Managing Director Dr. Matthew Ruhri. Because blood donations are possible despite the lockdown! And of course people who do not work in a startup can also donate.
