Children in Sri Lanka go to bed at night without food. The United Nations has warned that a similar situation may also occur in South Asian countries.

Sri Lanka is caught in an unprecedented economic downturn and has been pushed to the brink of famine. There has been a major downturn in the economy after the corona virus. Sri Lanka generally imports most of its products. It mainly imports medicines, dairy products, paper, fuel from foreign countries. After the corona, while these were being imported continuously, the foreign exchange reserves also started drying up.

It became impossible to import essential goods. Domestic prices have skyrocketed. People were unable to buy food items. They were forced to starve because they could not afford food at high prices.

In an interview given by the Director of the UN Division for South Asian Children, George Laurey Adjaye, said, “Sri Lankan children are avoiding food because they cannot pay for food items. They go to bed hungry. Children are in a state of uncertainty as to when they will get their next meal,” he said.

The Sri Lankan government is 51 billion dollars in debt. Sri Lanka was unable to repay not only this loan but also the interest. Currently, the Sri Lankan government is consulting on obtaining funds from the International Finance Corporation to bail the country out of debt. The second round of negotiations has been completed.

Russia’s war on Ukraine is also contributing to the rise in prices in South Asia. There is also a problem in getting nutritious food for children. The situation prevailing in Sri Lanka today may soon occur in South Asian countries as well, the UN Director has said.

UNICEF has allocated $25 million to meet the daily needs of Sri Lankan children. It is hoped that this will solve the food shortage of half of Sri Lanka’s children. According to the 2021 survey, out of a total of 5.70 lakh children studying in primary schools in Sri Lanka, 1.27 lakh children were malnourished.
