On the morning of August 13, 2007 Chiara – 26 years old – was killed in her house in Garlasco by Alberto Stasi, her boyfriend and at the time a student at Bocconi, 24 years old. After more than eight years of investigation and courtrooms, on 12 December 2015 he showed up at the door of the Bollate prison to turn himself in because that day the Supreme Court definitively confirmed the sentence of 16 years of imprisonment (a discounted figure of one third from the total number of years foreseen for the murder, because the trial had been celebrated with an abbreviated procedure). Now, having served at least a third of his 16 years, Alberto he would be entitled to ask to be able to work outside the prison during the day and go back to sleep in the cell in the evening. A semi-liberty for which his lawyer, Laura Panciroli, says that “we are taking action”, since “it is within the terms of the law to be admitted, obviously after the necessary evaluation by the supervisory court”.
The same lawyer Panciroli predicts that it is not «easy to find a solution with the right characteristics. We need a motivated employer, given the media attention on this matter. A solution that is respectful for him and for those who would work with him ». Everything still to be defined, therefore. Also because it is by no means certain that submitting a request means obtaining a yes, despite the behavior of a prisoner that the lawyer defines as “balanced and rational”. And so, faced with the possibility of knowing that he is semi-free, even Rita’s behavior can be defined as “balanced”, as always. “If the law says so …” is his first comment, in fact. All this yesterday, that is the day after the date of the 14th anniversary of the crime. For those who lose a loved one, the date of events becomes a sharp knife that will never stop reopening the wound. “Not that other days are bearable,” Rita thought, “But you know, when that day arrives … And then every year it’s the same thing: there is always someone who comes up with something that concerns us close to August 13 or close to Christmas.”
Alberto works in prison (services for telephone companies) and he tried three times – unsuccessfully – to question the verdict: two requests for review and an extraordinary appeal for factual error. “Totally unfounded initiatives that involved people completely unrelated to the case,” defines the Poggi lawyer, Gian Luigi Tizzoni. Who comments on the possible work outside: “The surveillance court will decide but a prisoner before deserving such a prize should give a sign of repentance.”
