Dharwad district consumer court imposed a penalty of Rs 85 thousand 177 on the Haliyala Bharat State Bank branch for dishonoring a ‘cheque’ written in Uttarakhand Kannada. Vadirajacharya Inamdar, an English professor from Dharwad in Karnataka, decided to withdraw Rs 6,000 from his savings account. For this he wrote a check at the State Bank of India branch in Haliyala. But, as it was written in Kannada, the bank branch rejected it.
Questioning this, Inamdar filed a petition in the Dharwad Consumer Court. The trial court said, ‘There is more than 9 lakh rupees in the savings account of the petitioner. He has given a check to withdraw 6,000 rupees. The rejection of the check on the ground that it was written in Kannada is like a dereliction of duty. Therefore, the petitioner has to pay 85 thousand 177 rupees as relief and penalty, it ordered yesterday.
