Status Act

Written by Rainer Ackermann

“The big wave of layoffs hasn’t happened,” said State Secretary Bence Rétvári on Thursday.

As a result of the so-called status law pushed through parliament by the governing parties, educators had to decide by the end of September whether they wanted to enter into a new legal relationship. As the State Secretary now informed the daily newspaper “Magyar Nemzet”, exactly 1,205 teachers would have preferred to quit. That is around one percent of all teachers. At the same time, 460 teachers started working as new teachers and were subject to the status law from the outset.

Although this development appears to be less dramatic than the unions predicted, the school authorities also ordered that schools should no longer publish the number of vacancies in the future. For the PSZ and PDSZ unions, it is clear that the government wants to sweep a problem under the carpet in this way, as if there were no longer a shortage of teachers.
