Ørland Wildfire Escalates, Forcing Evacuations and Mobilizing Civil Defense

A rapidly spreading wildfire near Oksvoll in Ørland, Norway, is prompting evacuations and a significant emergency response, with authorities bracing for a prolonged battle against the flames.

A blaze erupted Saturday afternoon near the waterworks in Oksvoll, quickly gaining momentum due to dry conditions and increasing winds. Emergency services were immediately dispatched, and the situation rapidly escalated, prompting the mobilization of civil defense forces. As of Saturday evening, the fire continues to grow, threatening nearby communities and infrastructure.

Fire Spreads, Civil Defense Activated

According to a senior official with the fire service, the fire has “great potential” for further spread. The Directorate for Community Security and Emergency Preparedness (DSB) has responded by deploying 20 personnel from the civil defense to assist in firefighting efforts. “We are bringing in a lot of people and have requested a helicopter,” stated a duty manager at the 110 center, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

Evacuations Underway, Infrastructure Threatened

The Mayor of Ørland, Hallgeir Grøntvedt, is preparing residents for a potentially lengthy response. “We believe that this will take some time,” he said, citing dry conditions and wind as key factors hindering containment. Evacuations are already underway, with a family relocated to relatives and livestock removed from a local farm. Elderly individuals requiring home care are also being moved to safety. Authorities have closed parts of a county road and disconnected electricity to the affected area as a precautionary measure. A hotel in Brekstad has been secured as a potential evacuation center.

Accidental Ignition Suspected

Initial investigations suggest the fire may have been started by children playing with a lighter. While the exact cause remains under investigation, authorities are urging caution and responsible behavior to prevent further incidents.

Challenging Conditions Hamper Response

Firefighters are facing significant challenges in combating the blaze. The central 110 center confirmed the fire is burning intensely, but acknowledged a lack of control. Forest fire helicopters are currently grounded due to darkness, with operations expected to resume at first light. A rescue manager at the Northern Norway Central Rescue Service stated, “We are ready to take action when it becomes light.”

A patrol on the scene reported that an entire mountainside is ablaze, fueled by exceptionally dry vegetation. “It is so dry that it becomes an explosive way for the fire to spread,” one officer noted, highlighting the urgent need for additional resources. Authorities are also requesting that onlookers stay away from the area, as their presence is hindering emergency operations. Residents are being advised to close windows and remain indoors.

Ongoing Assessment and Preparedness

The status of the fire remains fluid, with authorities continuously assessing the need for further evacuations. One farm has already been evacuated, and the situation is being closely monitored. “It is terribly dry in Oksvoll,” a senior official explained. “That’s why it’s burning very well up there now, but I have good faith that we will eventually get it under control.”

The DSB had already increased preparedness for potential wildfires this weekend, placing two forest fire helicopters on alert at Vigra and Voss, anticipating the heightened risk due to dry weather and high winds. This proactive measure underscores the growing concern over wildfire risk in the region.

The fire is increasing on Saturday night, and authorities are working tirelessly to protect lives, property, and livestock.
