American company Valve announcedthat during the New Year holidays, the digital distribution service for video games Steam reached an absolute record for the number of simultaneous online users. On January 7, there were over 33.7 million users online, almost 10.7 million of them were playing games simultaneously.

Resource VG247 believes, that the new record may be due to the growing popularity of the portable console Steam Deck. The previous Steam online record was set in March 2022 – then 33.6 million people used the service simultaneously. Steam has been growing strongly since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, but user growth has slowed recently.

Valve previously announced that a record number of new games were released on Steam in 2023 – 14.53 thousand. This is almost 2 thousand more than in 2022 (then 12.6 thousand games were released), and also more than the total number releases on the platform for the period from 2006 to 2017.
