Milan Finishes the Champions League Group Stage in Third Place, Headed to Europa League

The group stage of the Champions League came to an end Wednesday night, with Milan finishing in the third-place position, leading to the Europa League, after a 1-2 victory over Newcastle at St. James Park.

Rossoneri coach Stefano Pioli expressed disappointment at ending their journey in the Champions League, especially after a successful season last year. “We knew the home game was difficult, but I believe we deserved more,” Pioli said. “We should have taken our chances in the other games.”

Pioli added, “Tonight, Newcastle played at a high pace, but we stayed in the game and played a great second half. Now we will do everything in our power to win the Europa League.”

Pioli also addressed the team’s performance in the league, stating, “Today’s performance should only give us confidence going forward. My biggest regret is that the team is not utilizing its potential right now in Serie A, so I have to work on that. Our goal is to get the spot in the Champions League next season as well.”

In the Italian media, Pioli’s team was congratulated for their comeback and transformation, with recognition of their decisive victory at St. James Park. The Rossoneri suffered and knew ups and downs, but they played to their strengths and achieved the important victory.

Milan forward Raphael Liao also spoke about the victory, saying, “We had to do our job and we won. Now we are in the Europa League, Milan has never won this event and we want to do it.”

Liao added, “We are satisfied because we beat a strong team with a great crowd that always supports them. We also want to thank our fans, they pushed us and helped us win.”

With the Champions League journey coming to an end, Milan now looks forward to their path in the Europa League and the opportunity to make a mark in the competition.
