In a video message to the Israeli population, ex-government spokesman Seibert announced that he would become German ambassador to Israel. Today both countries are connected by a special friendship.

Dhe former government spokesman Steffen Seibert will be the new German ambassador to Israel. The 62-year-old confirmed this on Monday evening in a video message to the Israeli population on Twitter. The “Süddeutsche Zeitung” had already reported on the personnel in March.

Seibert was government spokesman under Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) for more than eleven years. He previously worked as a television journalist for ZDF. In Israel, he takes over the post from the previous ambassador, Susanne Wasum-Rainer, who had her last day of work there at the end of June.

Seibert spoke in Hebrew and English in the two-minute video. After the “monstrous crimes of the Shoah”, Germany and Israel now share a special friendship. “We have learned the lessons of our history,” assured Seibert. “One of the most important lessons is to stand by the State of Israel and be committed to its security.”
