Stelantis aims as high as possible

The Stellantis car group, which emerged in 2021 from the merger of Fiat Chrysler and PSA (including Citroen, Opel, Peugeot), wants to become the leading electric car manufacturer in Europe – ahead of Volkswagen and Tesla. “We are fighting for the first place in BEV (battery electric vehicle) sales in the European market,” Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares told analysts at a recent meeting of the heads of economic divisions.

In the first half of the year, Stellentis Group sold 105,413 electric cars in Europe, according to data from Dataforce. These values place the company close to the Volkswagen Group with 116,307 sales, well ahead of Tesla, which recorded 78,277 sales. The data includes registrations in the countries of the European Union as well as in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Iceland and Norway. Data from Portugal, Sweden and Finland were not available though.

Stellantis global sales based on electric models alone rose nearly 50% year-on-year to 136,000 units in the first half. The new Fiat 500, believe it or not, is the best-selling electric car in Germany and Italy and the Peugeot e-208 is the best-selling electric car in France, Stellentis reported this week in its official reports. The company now offers 20 fully electric models, with another 28 to be launched by 2024.

Stellentis gathers under its wings 14 different and distinct brands, including Alfa Romeo, Citroen, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel and Peugeot. By the end of the decade, sales in Europe should be made up entirely of electric vehicles and half of the sales will come from the US. By 2030, the industry estimates that more than 75 pure electric vehicles will be on the market, and worldwide sales of this type of drivetrain will climb to five million vehicles car a year.

The basis of Stellentis’ electric car attack originates from cutting-edge technologies, including four modern platforms with those dedicated to electric vehicles (but adapted to certain combustion engines). In the future, Stelantis will also produce its own battery cells, for which it cooperates in a joint venture with Mercedes as well as with saft’, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies. In the automotive industry in Germany, it is estimated that these figures definitely give Stellantis the ability to become the largest player in the automotive market in a few years.
