REPORTAGE – From crustaceans to fish, around twenty species conservation programs are underway in the research centre.
Special envoy to Bastia
Wedged between the lagoon and the Mediterranean Sea a few kilometers south of Bastia, the Stella Mare research center (University of Corsica/CNRS) offers a splendid setting as close as possible to its subject of study: marine biodiversity. “Our goal is to provide Corsican society with concrete actionsexplains Éric Durieux, lecturer in fisheries ecology. We conduct applied and transferable research. Thus, we strive to integrate fishermen, managers and civil society in all of our projects.” Founded in 2011, this research unit has continued to grow in just over ten years. It now employs around fifty people, and is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment including a 12-meter coastal vessel and a brand new ROV (remotely operated underwater vehicle) which dives to a depth of 300 meters.
