In theory: a clear note from Stellantis for the mechanical workshops of car dealerships, and a precise protocol. “Upon receipt of the container (a dedicated orange chest)use it immediately to store airbags recalled from customer vehicles,” the document insists. Important clarification, “the container must always be sealed using the appropriate straps, and stored in a safe place, away from any source of heat or water”.
In practice, in some garages, according to testimonies collected and photos obtained: stacks of boxes full of airbags from the equipment manufacturer Takata removed from vehicles, but stored outside the containers. In recent years, these airbags have caused numerous deaths, particularly in France, the Pyrenees or the Antilles, by projecting dangerous parts into the faces of drivers, due to a gas that ages poorly in hot and humid climates.
