A nationwide initiative is equipping schools with state-of-the-art STEM labs, fostering a new generation of innovators and bridging the educational gap between regions.
Vietnam is experiencing a surge in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education thanks to a substantial investment by PetroVietnam, the country’s national oil and gas group. The PetroVietnam STEM Innovation Program, launched on September 21,2025,aims to establish 100 internationally certified STEM education labs across 34 provinces and cities within 100 days. This ambitious project is already bearing fruit in Lao Cai Province, where Nguyen Hue High School and Cam Duong High School have recently unveiled cutting-edge facilities.
Modern Equipment Empowers Students
these new labs provide students access to a wide array of modern equipment. These include laboratory tools, programmable robots, sensor equipment, computer systems, and digital learning models. This technology will enable students to engage in research projects, simulate experiments, and delve into the world of artificial intelligence and automation. “Investing in a STEM education lab is very practical and meaningful for both teachers and students,” emphasized Pham Thi Hong Lan,principal of Cam Duong high School. “It’s an opportunity for students to have early exposure to modern science and technology.”
PetroVietnam’s Commitment to National Development
PetroVietnam’s investment extends beyond simply providing equipment. Each classroom receives approximately VND3.5 billion (roughly $140,000 USD) in funding, and the program is actively addressing existing challenges in STEM education. According to a senior official, the program aims to standardize facilities across regions, ensuring equitable access to quality STEM education for all Vietnamese students. “STEM classrooms have unified facilities,so students from all regions have the opportunity to receive STEM education,” the official stated.
The initiative has garnered praise from high-ranking government officials. Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra, during a visit to the newly completed lab at Nguyen Hue High School on December 17, lauded PetroVietnam’s commitment to social responsibility and long-term vision for the education sector. She highlighted the labs’ potential to revolutionize teaching methods, fostering “learning through practise” and cultivating a new generation of scientific thinkers.
Lao Cai Province Leads the Way
Lao Cai Province is at the forefront of this educational change, with three schools – Nguyen Hue High School, Cam Duong High School, and Muong Cuong Middle School – benefiting from the initial phase of the PetroVietnam STEM Innovation Program. Nguyen Thi Thu, principal of Nguyen Hue High School, noted that the introduction of the modern labs has created “a new and exciting learning atmosphere” for both students and teachers.
Students are already embracing the new opportunities. Hoang Tuan Vu, an 11th-grader at Nguyen Hue high school, expressed his gratitude for the program, stating, “Thanks to the in-classroom STEM applications with an English interface, my friends and I can improve our vocabulary and learn how to use terminology from science and engineering fields.”
A Sustainable Investment in Future Talent
PetroVietnam’s investment isn’t limited to infrastructure. The company is also contributing to the restoration and repair of classrooms damaged by natural disasters, creating a safe and agreeable learning environment for all students. This holistic approach underscores PetroVietnam’s commitment to building “knowlege infrastructure” and bridging the educational gap between regions.
According to Tran Quang Dung, standing secretary of the Vietnam National Energy industry Group Party Committee, the program represents a long-term investment in the country’s future. “This is not only timely material support, but also demonstrates PetroVietnam’s long-term investment in ‘knowledge infrastructure’ that contributes to bridging the educational gap between regions and establishing a foundation for nurturing quality talent.”
The success of the PetroVietnam STEM Innovation program in Lao Cai Province serves as a model for the nationwide rollout, promising a brighter future for Vietnamese students and a more innovative and competitive workforce for the nation.
