We take you to Ivory Coast, a country in which women are particularly affected by cervical cancer according to the Abidjan Cancer Registry. In 2020, 2,067 women were diagnosed positive and 1,417 died from it.

Ignorance, taboo due to the area concerned, false beliefs, lack of screening sites and access to vaccination, have all hindered the management of the disease. A disease that evolves over many years without any symptoms, so that women do not see the point of being tested. They therefore discover the disease once it is unfortunately too late. Faced with the scale of the problem, the WHO launched in 2020 the global initiative for the elimination of cervical cancer by 2030 with innovations in screening and treatment. A secondary cervical cancer prevention project called SUCCESS has been initiated in four countries around the world, including Côte d’Ivoire.

What are the expected results ? How is the implementation of such a project going on throughout the Ivorian territory? What are the difficulties encountered?

A report fromIgor Strauss.
