CHENNAI: In Tamil Nadu, the industrial sector has insisted that the Tamil Nadu government should take steps to set up additional factories for recycling old vehicles.

The Ministry of Road Transport has issued a notification to destroy vehicles older than 15 years, which are harmful to the environment, in 2022.

According to this, all vehicles, including personal vehicles, must be destroyed. It was also ordered that registration of vehicles older than 15 years should not be stored.

In this case, it has been emphasized that companies that recycle old vehicles should be set up in Tamil Nadu.

In this regard, the auto industry said:

In the last year, 2007-2008 alone, 10.4 crore vehicles have been registered across the country. There are very few companies that properly handle and recycle those vehicles. In Tamil Nadu, there is a company in Sriperumbudur next to Chennai.

The central government notification has come into effect from April. If the Tamil Nadu government implements the law immediately, it will be very difficult to recycle old vehicles.

Thus, it is necessary to set up additional number of factories in Tamil Nadu. Tamilnadu government should take steps for that.

Thus, they said.

Industry officials said:

In the cities of Chennai, Dharmapuri and Hosur, some companies are asking for land to set up old vehicle recycling factories. Talks are going on with those companies as well.

Companies setting up such factories will be given appropriate subsidy as per industry policy.

Also, those who give up old vehicles and get electric vehicles will be given a subsidy accordingly.

Thus, they said.
