The NBA suspended Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer for one year and fined the franchise $30 million on Wednesday, delivering a sweeping package of penalties following a yearlong investigation into salary cap circumvention regarding star player Kawhi Leonard and team sponsors.
The league’s decision, announced alongside the forfeiture of five first-round draft picks, marks a severe punishment handed down to an NBA franchise. A nearly yearlong investigation led by the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz uncovered a pattern of misconduct centering on impermissible off-court income opportunities arranged for Leonard.
Severe Sanctions and Draft Pick Forfeitures for the Clippers
Under the penalties finalized on Wednesday, the franchise will forfeit five first-round draft picks, spanning the 2029, 2030, 2031, 2032, and 2033 NBA drafts. In addition to the $30 million team fine, Ballmer was suspended from all league and team activities for one year. Investigators determined the owner knowingly sought to help Leonard obtain off-court income opportunities and approved business deals tied to the player’s endorsements.
The organization will also be subject to a compliance and monitoring program overseen by the league office for a period of five years. The investigation, which began after investigative reporting exposed hidden arrangements, detailed how the team affirmatively initiated off-court income opportunities between Leonard and four corporate partners doing business with the team: Aspiration Partners, Boingo Wireless, Daktronics, and Lockton Insurance.
Executive Suspended Without Pay and Investigation Origins
Top leadership within the Clippers front office faced direct discipline from the league. Gillian Zucker, the team’s president of business operations, received a one-year suspension without pay for being primarily and directly culpable for the endorsement arrangements and for providing false and misleading statements to investigators. Lawrence Frank, president of basketball operations, was suspended without pay for six months for his involvement and for approving impermissible expenses incurred by Leonard and his family.
The inquiry itself stems from disclosures found in the bankruptcy documents of Aspiration, a sustainable banking firm. The company had previously signed Leonard to a four-year endorsement agreement worth $28 million.
Kawhi Leonard Avoids Suspension as Trade Status Shifts
While team executives and the owner faced harsh bans, Kawhi Leonard avoided a game suspension or having his player contract voided. He was, however, ordered to pay the league $700,000 in connection with his violations, which included pressuring the team for off-court income and failing to reimburse personal expenses. Dennis Robertson, Leonard’s uncle and former business manager, was banned from conducting business with NBA teams and affiliates for five years.
With his contract left intact, Leonard is expected to be traded to the Toronto Raptors.
Fierce Pushback and the Path to Arbitration
The Clippers organization mounted an immediate defense against the league’s conclusions, releasing a pointed statement that questioned the fairness of the Wachtell Lipton investigation.
