The animal rights organization has harshly criticized the Oscar-winning director for choosing to use a real animal during the shooting of the semi-biographical film and asked for the scenes in which he appears to be removed.

Premiered at the latest Toronto International Film Festival, “The Fabelmans” met with almost unanimous acclaim. The “almost” refers to PETA which, on the contrary, harshly criticized Steven Spielberg for a detail inserted in the film. The object of the dispute by the animal rights association is the real monkey used during the shooting and which appears for a few seconds in the official trailer.

The complaint

In the short sequence, in fact, we see the monkey jumping around the house and on family members and we hear Michelle Williams – who plays the mother of the young Sammy Fabelmans in the semi-biographical film of the Oscar-winning director – say that she bought it because “she needed laugh”. Although it is not known for the moment how many actual minutes were reserved for the monkey in the film (which will be released in US theaters on November 11), PETA has nevertheless requested that the animal be removed from the final edit. “Steven Spielberg was imaginative enough to create an adorable alien in 1982, which was then followed by herds of realistic computer-generated dinosaurs in the 90s – reads the organization’s release, signed by Debbie Metzler – so what’s his sorry for dragging a real monkey into a movie in 2022? His mother may have needed “a laugh,” but at PETA that doesn’t make people laugh, and it wouldn’t make anyone who cares about animal welfare laugh. This monkey scene expresses support for the cruel animal handled industry and advertises the sleazy trade in wildlife as pets. For this reason PETA invites Spielberg to rise to the height of his reputation as a leader in the sector, leaving this scene on the floor of the editing room ». However, given that “The Fabelmans” has already been shown to the public, it seems difficult to think that the scene (or any scenes) with the monkey can be eliminated.
