Stevland Judkins, known globally as Stevie Wonder, brings his legendary 1976 masterwork Songs in the Key of Life to the Accor Arena in Paris on October 15, 2026, marking his first performance in France in sixteen years.
Fifty Years of Songs in the Key of Life
Half a century after its release, Songs in the Key of Life remains the towering apex of Stevie Wonder’s classic period. Released on September 28, 1976, the monumental double album capped an astonishing five-year creative run that also yielded Music of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, and Fulfillingness’ First Finale, as Les Inrocks reported. The expansive collection debuted at the top of the Billboard 200, where it stayed for fourteen weeks.

The creation of this grand project stretched across two and a half years, unconstrained by calendars as the artist moved between multiple studios including Crystal Sound in Hollywood, The Hit Factory in New York, and Record Plant facilities in both Los Angeles and Sausalito. More than 130 people participated in the extensive recording process, bringing together talents such as Herbie Hancock, George Benson, “Sneaky Pete” Kleinow, and Minnie Riperton.
Decades later, its cultural footprint endures across generations and genres. Artists such as Coolio sampled Pastime Paradise, while Mary J. Blige and George Michael reinterpreted As in the 1990s. The track Another Star found a new life during a memorable 2014 Grammy Awards performance where Daft Punk, Nile Rodgers, and Pharrell Williams wove it into a medley with Get Lucky and Le Freak.
The Unprecedented Motown Contract Battle
The double album almost never saw the light of day. By 1975, a 25-year-old Stevie Wonder was exhausted after churning out three acclaimed albums in two years. Discovering that Motown had amassed thirty million dollars from his work while he had received only a fraction, the artist fought to take control of his career.

The resulting document featured terms described in literature as completely unprecedented in the recording industry, drawing comparisons to the conditions secured by a young Orson Welles arriving in Hollywood decades earlier. As Gordy noted in a 1997 documentary, the figures outpaced the combined contracts of Elton John and Neil Diamond, leaving the Motown executive tremblant dans mes bottes

Rare Archival Releases and the European Tour
The current anniversary tour kicked off on October 13, 2026, at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham, where 15,000 spectators experienced the rare treat of hearing the entire album performed live by an ensemble of 27 musicians, including bassist Nate Watts and musical director Greg Phillingannes. Following the Birmingham opener, the tour arrives in Paris for a long-awaited appearance at the Accor Arena, before continuing across Europe and North America.

What Remains Ahead
Beyond the celebratory live dates, perfectionism continues to dictate the pace of Wonder’s unreleased catalog. While hundreds of tracks remain locked in his vault from decades of recording, the artist has officially announced Through the Eyes of Wonder, a long-planned studio album slated for 2027.
