In its new edition, Stiftung Warentest tested 18 all-round toothpastes, from branded products to discounters’ own brands. Seven received the “very good” rating: find out which toothpaste won the test here.

The choice of toothpastes in the pharmacy or supermarket is wide: when it comes to universal toothpastes you can hardly make a wrong decision. In a study by Stiftung Warentest, the majority of the 18 tested products performed well (test “11/2024 edition). This means: they protect against tooth decay and remove discoloration without containing critical ingredients on a large scale.

Seven products were rated “very good” and six “good”. Product testers rate a five as “satisfactory,” but this is also the worst grade in the test.

These are the test winners

At the top is Blend-a-med’s “Complete Expert 24H Protection” toothpaste (grade: 1.3). According to product testers, it removes discoloration very well, which is not a given with universal toothpastes.

Meridol’s “Periodont Expert” and Oral-B Pro Science Advanced’s “Gum Intensive Care” shared second place, both receiving a rating of 1.4.

Only two products with controversial whitening agents

A question that is always part of toothpaste testing: is there titanium dioxide in the product? The whitening agent is suspected of damaging genetic material if ingested and is banned in food across the EU from August 2022. Titanium dioxide is currently still allowed in cosmetics, including toothpastes.

The good news: Almost all suppliers do not use the whitening agent and Stiftung Warentest only finds it in the ingredient list of two toothpastes – points deducted.

Some products protect the gums – silently and secretly

BTW: list of ingredients. Testers positively noted that some toothpastes contain substances that soothe inflamed and bleeding gums. But: Not all of these products are advertised on the packaging.

If you want to check whether the toothpaste supports gum health, you can look for the ingredients zinc citrate, tin fluoride, and tin chloride. They can be found under the names “zinc citrate”, “stannous fluoride” and “stannous chloride”.
