Studies continue to link corona infections to cardiovascular and health problems after recovery, ranging from shortness of breath to myocarditis. Now, researchers from the University of Portsmouth claim that even a mild case of corona can harm heart health in the long run.

In the first ever project that compared arterial stiffness infection levels before and after Corona; A key marker linked to aging and the function of our arteries, found that the continued impact of the corona is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia, and in extreme cases, death.

The international team of researchers behind these findings conducted the study using baseline measurements taken from a group of participants involved in a completely separate study that began pre-pandemic, which also investigated arterial stiffness. Among those diagnosed with mild corona, arterial and cardiovascular function was still affected by the virus two to three months after infection.

Side effects included stiffer and more dysfunctional arteries that could lead to the development of cardiovascular disease. Overall, the authors of the study believe that this study has revealed that age and time since the corona infection have a connection to increased aging of the arteries.

“We were surprised to see such a decline in vascular health, which has further deteriorated over time since the corona infection. Normally, you would expect the inflammation to decrease over time after infection, and that all physiological functions would return to a normal or healthy level,” said Dr. Maria Priscio from the School of Sports, Health and Physical Activity at the University of Portsmouth, in a press release.

“We can only speculate as to what causes this phenomenon without further investigation, but emerging evidence indicates that it is due to the corona activating the autoimmune process that leads to vascular deterioration,” she added.
