The stolen painting “Eve” by Marc Chagall was returned to the Carlton Fine Arts gallery located in the center of Manhattan. Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the theft of the work, which has an estimated value of $100,000.

As Day.Az reports with reference to RBC, Artnet reports this.

The kidnapping took place back in September 2023. Three criminals acted together: they parked a Honda Accord on the street, after which one of them walked to the gallery, broke the glass front door with a hammer and grabbed the canvas. The crime was captured on CCTV cameras.

The kidnappers managed to hide from law enforcement officers for several months. It wasn’t until February 2024 that the New York Police Department confirmed that 59-year-old Carlton Smith and 61-year-old Larry Nestman had been caught. A third suspect is still at large.

Both men are charged with burglary and criminal possession of stolen property, and Nestman is additionally charged with criminal mischief.

Gallery owner Charles Saffati admitted that he initially took the news of the discovery of the work as a joke. “It’s amazing. It’s like winning the lottery,” he told NBCN.

Today the painting is again exhibited in the gallery.
