Imagine that almost every day of your life, you experience stomach aches, accompanied by diarrhea, constipation or a combination of both. Like an endless gastroenteritis. This is the daily life of people who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (or “functional colopathy”), i.e. 5 to 10% of the population. Symptoms usually start between late adolescence and the age of 40, and affect women more frequently.

Not always taken seriously by their doctor, patients are sometimes tempted to resort to diagnostic or therapeutic solutions that have not been proven. Can we get rid of these symptoms? What are the really effective treatments? To see more clearly, Le Figaro takes stock with two specialists.
