Millions of adults may be “clueless” about their gut health and unaware of how gut health can affect sleep, mood and energy. A survey of 2,000 adults reveals that nearly half (47%) don’t know where to start when it comes to improving their gut health, even though 82% agree it’s an important part of their overall health.

The survey shows that the public’s knowledge about what the stomach actually does is also lacking. Only 60 percent say that one of the main functions of the intestines is to digest food. Of those who claim to know which parts of the body make up the intestine, one in five mistakenly think the gallbladder is part of the intestine, and 13% mistakenly think the liver is. Three out of ten have no idea that both the small intestine and the large intestine are important components of the intestine.

“As research has shown, there is an awareness that gut health is important, but there is not enough clear information to support people in taking care of their guts,” says a spokesperson for Activia, which launched the “What’s in the gut?” museum.
“The aim of the museum will be to help people navigate gut health in a fun, accessible and educational way while equipping people with information on how to take care of it. There are many things you can do to ensure you maintain your gut health and a little bit of knowledge goes a long way. It’s important to have open discussions about gut health to raise the Awareness and really breaking the taboo,” he added.
A survey conducted by OnePoll looked at what people consider to be the best ways to maintain a healthy gut. These included drinking more water (46%), consuming dietary fiber (45%) and eating foods such as whole grains, bananas and greens (42%), which experts say are all true when it comes to maintaining gut health.
