Stomach Flu Outbreak in Cardiology Department at Flevo Hospital

September 10, 2023 – 12:41 AM Update: an hour ago

A stomach flu outbreak has occurred in the cardiology department at the Flevo Hospital in Almere, leading to the suspension of new patient admissions to its nursing ward within the department.

To accommodate the new patients, the hospital has made arrangements to temporarily house them in other departments until the situation is under control, according to the hospital authorities.

In an effort to contain the spread of the virus, patients infected with the norovirus are being cared for in separate rooms. The hospital has also implemented additional cleaning rounds and emphasized the importance of handwashing among healthcare staff.

Furthermore, visitors are being urged to wash their hands thoroughly after their visit and to exit the hospital immediately. Employees who experience any symptoms related to the virus are required to avoid coming to work until they have been symptom-free for a minimum of 24 hours.

Norovirus is responsible for causing inflammation in the intestines and is highly contagious. Often referred to as stomach flu, the virus is primarily found in the feces and vomit of individuals carrying the infection.

Typically, symptoms of the illness last between one to four days, during which patients may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps.

With the hospital taking swift action to tackle the outbreak and enforce hygiene measures, efforts are underway to curb the spread of the stomach flu throughout the facility.
