King Edward 1st, who reigned from 1272 to 1307, took the rock from Scotland in the 14th century as spoils of war – goods and riches that the victors managed to take for themselves. She was then placed under King Edward’s throne, which has been used in coronation ceremonies for over 700 years.

In 1950 the object was stolen by a group of Scottish students, but returned to London the following year. Symbolically, the rock was returned to Scotland in 1996, at the height of independence sentiment, but with the condition that it could be used in future British coronations.

According to legend, the stone was taken from the Holy Land, with passages through Egypt, Sicily, Spain and Ireland, before reaching the Scottish monastery of Scone, in the 9th century. But, according to David Breeze, professor of history and archeology at the University of Edinburgh, it is very likely that it actually originated in the Scottish kingdom of the Picts.
