The ‘Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse and Harassment’ campaign, organized by ‘World Vision Ecuador’ in collaboration with the canton’s Public Defender’s Office, is given in order to face this serious problem in our city.

Gissela Lema, promoter of the Development of Children and Adolescents of ‘World Vision Ecuador’, said that a participatory diagnosis of the reality of children and adolescents in the area has been carried out during the year 2021, the same one that showed that the Harassment and sexual abuse were one of the constant concerns of all the families. Thus, among the investigations that she had to direct this operation that, according to the National Council for Gender Equality, in Ecuador, 65% of cases of sexual abuse occur in the family environment close to boys and girls.
Likewise, to stop abuses against children, according to the Ministry of Education, in the year 2022, 4,115 victims of sexual violence were reported, 90% of cases involving girls and adolescents between the ages of 8 and 14. During that same year, 57 suicides and 607 cases of bullying were registered within the educational system. Similarly, he explained that in the study they have carried out, together with the Ministry of Education and UNICEF in 2017, it was shown that 1 in five students between the ages of 11 and 18 claim to have been a victim of bullying.
Situation. Thus, as a result of this situation, they have been carrying out this campaign for the second consecutive year to benefit this vulnerable group that are boys and girls and, in some way, contribute to the prevention and care of infants.
Voices. As a result of this initiative in 2023, Lema said that 449 families belonging to eighteen neighborhoods of the following parishes were sensitized: Veloz, Maldonado, Yaruquíes, Lizarzaburu and Juan de Velasco.
Important. What was committed helped families to have a broad vision of warning signs, through workshops and participatory activities, this with the purpose that the first people to ensure the safety of children generate safe environments, and the role which is a fundamental factor to protect rights, but, above all, to know the routes of complaints in case of a frank violation of rights.
Details. Likewise, to end this campaign, a cycle ride was scheduled as a valuable opportunity to exalt the rights of children and the family.
