BOLZANO. A 36-year-old Albanian citizen, resident in Italy, was stopped on Sunday 15 December on the Austrian side of the Brenner motorway with twelve kilos of cocaine.
The drugs, packaged in packages, were discovered in the bodywork of the car during a check, Tyrolean Police Director Helmut Tomac said at a press conference, as reported by APA.
With a market value of 1.2 million eurosthis is “so far the largest cocaine seizure ever in Tyrol”. The man’s vehicle with German license plates, which was crossing Tyrol from north to south, was checked.
The man was “entangled in contradictions” regarding his destination and the purpose of the trip, explained Harald Baumgartner, head of the foreigners and border police department. After consulting with German colleagues, the suspicion eventually arose that it might be a “smuggling trip”.
The Albanian then went to the Brenner police station and the vehicle was literally “dismantled”, explained Tomac. The 36-year-old, who is now in prison, has so far been “rather reluctant to talk”. The investigations are still “at the beginning”. Therefore, nothing is known about any accomplices or a wider network.
