The musical theater show entitled “Marika told me – Marika took me out”, with Eleni Tsaligopoulou, Korina Legaki and Panagiota Vitetzaki, a co-production of the State Theater of Northern Greece with DI.PE.THE. Serron, goes up to the outdoor theater of E.H.M. in Ioannina, on Friday, August 23, at 9 pm.

Giorgos Andreou and Odysseas Ioannou create a musical as well as a theatrical work, dedicated to the women of folk song. Marika is Papagika, Marika is Nino, but for the play Marika is every folk singer of the first half of the twentieth century.
The work and performance is a tribute to the archetypal female figures that influenced the Greek folk and rebetiko song of the last century. The women of our song, heroines of the stage and of life, with their art and their belief in the miracle, rose to be miraculous figures of Greek Culture. Their voices have accompanied and marked the historical path of Hellenism. The songs they performed as well as the lives they lived are a valuable testimony and a spiritual legacy.
The work of Giorgos Andreou and Odysseus Ioannou refers to the time period between 1920 and 1960. Forty years that shaped the Greek Folk Song in all its versions – Smyrneiko, Rebetiko, Laiko. Forty years of masterpieces next to the triumphs and disasters of Hellenism. Forty exciting, shocking, unforgettable years. And thanks to the invention of recording, the magical voices are always close to us, resounding and shocking, giving birth to the experiential teaching that only Tradition can offer, from mouth to mouth, from generation to generation.
With occasion, biographical and real events, the play tells the story not as it happened “in truth”, but by “teasing” some of its parameters, it wonders how it would have been if things had been done differently. It contains original songs written by George Andreou, but also many songs – milestones from the precious history of folk song (Smirne, traditional as well as songs by important historical creators of folk song).
The main characters of the play are two singers of the song and an actress: – The “old” is performed by Eleni Tsaligopoulou, one of the most important singers of the modern Greek song, the “younger” is performed by Korina Legaki, one of the most talented singers of the younger generation , and the daughter-narrator is played by Panagiota Vitetzaki.
Performance duration: 1 hour and 50 minutes. Advance tickets cost 15 euros, reduced (students, pupils, over 65) 13 euros and there is also a 11 euro ticket for teachers and professors. More.com ticket sales.
