Ciaran has left his mark. The day after the storm passed through France, which left two dead and 47 injured according to a new report this Friday, the scars are still present. Many French people are without electricity and transport remains disrupted. The bad weather has calmed down, and only four departments are still classified under orange vigilance: Pas-de-Calais for floods, Pyrénées-Atlantiques for rain-flooding, Haute-Corse and Corse-du-Sud for wind and wave-submersion.

Electricity

Some 450,000 homes were still without electricity this Friday midday, mainly in Brittany and Normandy, Enedis said. The most affected regions remain Brittany (314,000 customers cut off) and Normandy (115,000), according to the distribution network manager.

Up to 1.2 million homes have suffered power outages and a million customers have suffered mobile network outages since the storm began Wednesday evening. This situation disrupted the supply of drinking water in the Concarneau area. So far, 62% of homes impacted by Storm Ciaran have been replenished.

Floods, floods and mudslides

Several dozen people were sheltered in community halls in Pas-de-Calais, where villages still had their feet in the water this Friday morning. According to the Vigicrues website, the floods of the Liane and the Hem are “exceptional”. “This is the worst flood I have experienced since my arrival in Recques-sur-Hem” in 1970, testified the mayor of this commune in Pas-de-Calais, Gérard Louguet.

In Seine-Maritime, a mudslide hit Dieppe overnight. In the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, the seafront towns banned access to the beaches, and in Gironde, vines had their feet in the water to the east of Bordeaux.

In Southern Corsica, 240 people were evacuated overnight from the Sagone campsite, partly flooded, to a village hall, according to emergency services.

Transport slowed down again

Flights scheduled for departure and arrival from Calvi airport have been temporarily suspended.

As for rail transport, disruptions continue in Brittany, Normandy and Hauts-de-France, with a resumption planned only for Saturday on certain lines.

Returns from school holidays will be “ensured” by the SNCF this weekend, however assured the Minister of Transport, Clément Beaune, this Friday.
