He was overwhelmed by the solidarity in the monastery, writes Father Heinz Menz on the website of the Benediktbeuern monastery in Upper Bavaria. Since hailstones the size of a tennis ball caused serious damage there on Saturday afternoon, 45 young people have been busy “sweeping up glass splinters, sealing windows and eliminating water damage”. According to the director of the Salesian community in the monastery, the young people are among the many young people who are currently studying in the monastery, spending holidays there or completing a voluntary year.

They were also there when the storm hit the region around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The damage caused by storm and hail presented the monastery with a “huge task”, emphasizes Father Claudius Amann. He thanks the technical relief organization, civil protection and the fire brigade for their support. The west-facing facades and roofs of almost all parts of the monastery complex were badly damaged. The storm smashed entire rows of windows and caused water damage inside.

The baroque basilica is also affected. A spokeswoman for the monastery told the Catholic News Agency that the damage was in the “higher millions”. The monastery will remain closed until at least Sunday.

The storm in the Bavarian Oberland with storm, heavy rain and hail showers caused severe damage in the region. Bad Bayersoien was also particularly affected. “We have almost 400 houses in the village. Of these, 370 are affected. Sometimes there are no roof tiles left on the roofs,” said the mayor, Gisela Kieweg, to the German Press Agency. On Saturday you could watch “how the panes started to bend – and how they then shattered”. The hailstones would have had a diameter of up to eight centimeters. Support came from all over Bavaria. Emergency roofs from Versicherungskammer Bayern were partly brought in from Lower Franconia.

Austria was also affected by heavy rainfall. In the meantime, with the slacking rain, many water levels have dropped. In the state of Tyrol, the rain had led to water levels in streams and rivers that had not been this high for decades. In the Zillertal, the Ziller carried enormous masses of water. The result was flooding, traffic delays and closed roads. Roads were still closed in some regions on Tuesday.
