A strong storm hit Nova Iguaçu, in Rio de Janeiro, this Saturday afternoon (28). According to the Municipal Secretariat of Civil Defense, 19 incidents were recorded in several neighborhoods, nine of which were due to flooding.

The fact that called the most attention was the collapse of part of a quarry located behind the parking lot of Shopping Nova Iguaçu. At the moment, the high volume of rain had transformed the stone massif into a kind of “waterfall”.

According to the prefecture, no one was injured, but those who were at the scene panicked about the event. Several images circulating on the internet show the exact moment when the stones collapsed.

In a note, the management stated that the Civil Defense “was on site and verified that the stones that rolled from the massif reached approximately half of the 65 meters of distance to the protection screen”. And yet, “a new inspection on site will be held this Sunday (29)”.

Also, inside the shopping center, part of the plaster lining of one of the women’s bathrooms collapsed. According to the mall, there were no reports of injuries.

Despite the inconvenience caused in the city, the storm left no victims or homeless. The municipality remains on alert.
