The storm that hit Dourados on Thursday afternoon (19) destroyed one of the city’s main postcards. The 20-meter mast that supported the Brazilian Flag, at the access junction to Caarapó and Ponta Porã, fell during heavy rain (see the video above).

For at least a decade, the flag has welcomed anyone entering the city via BRs 163 and 463. Despite being called “Praça Walter Guaritá Marquez” since 2014, the place is known as “Trevo da Bandeira”.

The rain with strong winds started around 4pm, but the storm reached its peak at 4:13pm. According to the Climate Guide, from Embrapa Agropecuária Oeste, at that time a wind of 69 kilometers per hour was recorded, classified as “windstorm” on the Beaufort Scale.

By 5:30 pm, the agrometeorological station installed at Embrapa’s headquarters, on BR-163, had recorded 71 millimeters of rain, almost half of what was expected for the entire month (146 mm) and above the 63 millimeters recorded from the 1st to today.

Residents report fallen trees in all regions of the city, especially in the center. The wind also knocked down trees in the Matinha region, on BR-463. Shops in the center were flooded by water that invaded the sidewalk. Videos posted on social media show flooding even at Shopping Avenida Center.

Municipal Civil Defense teams remain on the streets, surveying the damage. By 5pm, the Fire Department had received four calls of falling trees.
