Table of Contents
the first volume of Stranger Things Season 5 has dropped a major bombshell, hinting at a dramatic evolution for Will Byers and foreshadowing a notable change in the show’s dynamic this season.
As Stranger Things embarks on its final chapter, a significant twist has been subtly teased in the show’s marketing and now spectacularly revealed in the first four episodes available on Netflix. The narrative is shifting, placing a renewed focus on Will Byers, the character who initially sparked the supernatural events in Hawkins, Indiana.
Foreshadowing in the Marketing Materials
Noah Schnapp, the actor portraying Will Byers, recently revealed that the promotional poster for Season 5 contained a deliberate clue. He explained that Will’s positioning above Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) on the poster wasn’t accidental, but rather a subtle indication of his burgeoning, previously dormant abilities.
“It’s always supposed to kind of feel the vibe of the season and give an essence of where everyone’s characters stand in that era and chapter of our story,” Schnapp told glamour. “So yeah, you can see a strength in him on there. And obviously, they didn’t want to spoil it with any blood or anything, but as close as you can get. Everything is very intentional that we do.”
The Dramatic Reveal in ‘Chapter Four: Sorcerer’
The midseason finale of Volume 1 delivers a stunning moment as Will seemingly takes control of the Demogorgons during a desperate escape attempt from a military base under attack. With Eleven preoccupied in the Upside Down, all hope appeared lost.Suddenly, the creatures freeze in mid-air and begin to disintegrate, revealing Will’s newfound telekinesis.
The episode concludes with Will looking up and wiping blood from his nose – a striking parallel to a known side effect of Eleven’s power usage. Schnapp previously discussed the episode’s conclusion with Deadline, emphasizing the character’s resilience.
“I think people mistake fear for weakness. Will has had a lot of fear through the years, because of what he’s had to endure, but that doesn’t mean he’s weak,” Schnapp stated. “he’s pushed through that and come out stronger, and he does it scared every time. He always comes back, and he never crumbles. So that is his strength, and I think he shows that that he is stronger than we all think.”
A Return to the Beginning
According to co-creator Matt Duffer, Season 5 represents a full-circle moment for the series, particularly for Will Byers. He noted that Will was somewhat sidelined in Season 4, but remains a central character in the overarching narrative.
“When we first started talking about Season 5, we started talking about Will,” Duffer explained.”He’s the character who kicked it all off, and a lot of this season was about going full circle and going back to the beginning, which raised questions about how he vanished and whatnot.”
Duffer further elaborated that the season is deeply rooted in Will’s personal journey of self-discovery. “But more than that, this was about Will’s journey in terms of finding out really who he was, and coming to terms with that,” he added. “so we liked the idea of tying that into some of the more supernatural elements, that in order to become his most powerful self, he had to also really come to terms with who he is.”
the remaining episodes of Stranger Things Season 5 will roll out on Christmas, with the series finale arriving on New Year’s Eve, promising a resolution to Will’s journey and a final showdown with the forces of the Upside Down.
