A new study suggests that natural foods containing bitter-tasting polyphenols may help control blood sugar levels and appetite by triggering hormones similar to those used in diabetes and weight loss drugs Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro.

Polyphenols are bioactive compounds found in plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, seeds, coffee, and tea. However, they have a low absorption rate in the body and are mostly excreted without being digested. However, they can still affect our health.

According to reports from EurekAlert, the science news site of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and Newsweek, a joint research team from Tokyo Shibaura Institute of Technology, Takasaki University of Health and Welfare, the University of Tokyo, and Cantazzaro University in Italy investigated the health benefits of polyphenols for a study published in the peer-reviewed journal Food Bioscience.

“Despite their low absorption rate, there have been studies showing that polyphenols improve glucose tolerance. We are investigating the relationship between polyphenol intake and the risk of type 2 diabetes, as the mechanism of this beneficial effect is still unknown,” said Naomi Osakabe, a professor at Shibaura Institute of Technology, in a research press release.

Studies have shown that when you eat foods containing polyphenols, the bitter taste is recognized by taste receptors in your mouth and other parts of your digestive system, which send signals to your intestines to begin secreting digestive hormones.

One of these digestive hormones is glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which is the hormone that diabetes and obesity drugs Ozempic, Wigobi, and Maunjaro are trying to mimic. GLP-1, a hormone that is produced naturally in the body, helps regulate blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin secretion. It also works with other digestive hormones to affect gut motility, slowing down the rate at which food is digested, making you feel fuller for longer and eating less.

The researchers theorized that consuming polyphenol-containing foods could trigger the release of the hormone GLP-1, thereby reducing the risk of obesity and diabetes.

“Gastrointestinal (GI) hormones are known to regulate eating behavior and maintain glucose tolerance (the ability to metabolize glucose) via hormonal and nervous systems, so the bitter taste of polyphenols may help reduce the risk of diabetes and its complications via T2R (taste receptor) activation,” said Professor Osakabe. “Our study emphasizes the importance of polyphenol intake to reduce the risk of obesity and diabetes through regulation of blood sugar levels and appetite.”

Polyphenols are abundant in many plant foods, including berries such as strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries, red grapes, pomegranates, olives, beans, artichokes, chicory, spinach, cocoa, coffee, tea, chestnuts, hazelnuts, pecans, flaxseeds, cloves, turmeric, and red wine. Most foods rich in polyphenols are characterized by their vivid colors.

Polyphenols are a type of antioxidant. They are known to be effective in reducing damage known as oxidative stress in the body. Polyphenols also have anti-inflammatory properties, which may help prevent or alleviate chronic diseases such as obesity, arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and dementia.
