The popular group ‘Stray Kids’ has reached the top spot on Billboard’s main album chart, Billboard 200, for the fifth time. Jimin, a member of the global super group ‘BTS’, has ranked second on Billboard 200 with two consecutive albums. This is the first time that K-pop albums have taken the first and second spots on Billboard 200.

According to Billboard’s chart preview article on the 28th (local time), Stray Kids’ 9th mini album ‘ATE’ released on the 19th ranked 1st on the ‘Billboard 200’ dated August 3rd with sales of 232,000 copies.

The Billboard 200 ranking is calculated by adding SEA (streaming equivalent albums) which converts streaming counts into album sales, and TEA (track equivalent albums) which converts digital music downloads into album sales to the traditional album sales score. The traditional album sales of ‘Eight’ are 218,000 copies, and the SEA is 13,000 copies.

It has the highest first-week sales of any K-pop album this year. Consisting mostly of Korean songs, “Eight” is the 25th non-English album to top the Billboard 200. It is the second non-English album this year, following K-pop icon girl group Twice’s 13th mini-album “Mini U-S.” Both Stray Kids and Twice are under JYP Entertainment.

Accordingly, Stray Kids has maintained its momentum by placing five albums at the top of the Billboard 200 in a row over the past 28 months.

Stray Kids previously topped the Billboard 200 with their 6th mini album ‘ODDINARY’ in March 2022, their 7th mini album ‘MAXIDENT’ in October of the same year, their 3rd full-length album ‘★★★★★ (5-STAR)’ in June of last year, and their 8th mini album ‘ROCKSTAR (樂-STAR)’ in November of the same year. The only artist to have five albums ranked #1 on the Billboard 200 since its debut was rapper DMX from 1998 to 2003.

Stray Kids is also challenging BTS’ stronghold, which has topped the Billboard 200 six times in a row.
Stray Kids is also predicted to enter Billboard’s main single chart, the ‘Hot 100’, for the third time. The title song ‘Chichik Boom’ from ‘Eight’ is expected to debut in the top 60 of the ‘Hot 100’ this week. Previously, Stray Kids had two songs from ‘Rockstar’ on the ‘Hot 100’, the title song ‘Rock (樂)’ (90th) and ‘Lose My Breath (Feat. Charlie Puth)’ (90th).

Jimin’s ‘Muse’ sold 96,000 copies this week. Physical sales were 74,000 copies, SEA sales were 15,000 copies, and TEA sales were 7,000 copies.

It is the same ranking as Jimin’s first solo album ‘Face’ released last year. The second place is the highest ranking for a K-pop solo artist on the chart, achieved by Jimin and others. Other BTS members’ solo albums, such as Suga’s ‘D-Day’, V’s ‘Lay Over’, and Jungkook’s ‘Golden’, also took second place.

Jimin is the first person to have two albums in a row ranked #2 on the Billboard 200. This achievement is significant as it was achieved despite not being able to properly promote the album due to his military service.

The title song of ‘Muse’, ‘Who’, is expected to be the sixth song to enter Billboard’s main single chart, ‘Hot 100’. The song is currently expected to debut at number 13 on the chart.
