We are meeting on the way to Paris, and it is probably already clear to everyone what you will do in the French capital.

Two questions this time. To attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games and sympathize with our athletes – my first Games will probably be shooting and tennis – and also to participate in a sports summit organized by the French President.

What do you expect from the Latvian national team and what do you wish for it?

I guess everyone is waiting for a high and award-winning place, but of course we will all sympathize with each of our athletes. I wish them strength, vigor and, of course, a little luck.

Medals can raise the self-esteem of an entire nation!

Of course, we all would like to win the highest possible places and have medals, but we have often seen that our athletes are able to bring joy even just by fighting, showing their desire for success. You are not always lucky, sometimes the factor of randomness may play a role, but of course the first, second and third places or medals are what motivates a lot. However, when people see that the athlete and their support team have worked and are trying, sometimes that sportsmanship itself is even more important than the medal. As we laughed, gold was not as valuable to each other as bronze was to our hockey team.

What is your own take on the sport, especially considering that your adjutant is a world-class beach volleyball referee and also a photographer who has been to the Olympics many times?

I have more than one athlete in my team, including in security. There are things I’m really excited about and following. My attitude is maximally positive.
