“Today we must stop taking the French hostage.” A few hours before a massive strike by SNCF controllers, the opposition, led by the Republicans, is stepping up to the plate.

“We are going to introduce legislative texts to regulate” the right to strike in transport, Eric Ciotti, the party leader, announced on TF1 this Thursday. “Since 1947, there has not been a year when the SNCF has not been on strike, and always at decisive moments when the French go on vacation,” tackled the deputy for Alpes-Maritimes.

Put an end to “hostage taking”

The strikers “are unworthy of the French”, attacked Eric Ciotti, denouncing the “permanent escalation” of the SNCF unions which are “destroying their company”. “You have to say stop. »

Same story in the Senate. “The strike must be the ultimate weapon”, underlined, on BFMTV and RMC, the president of the upper house of Parliament, Gérard Larcher. He assures that he wants to take steps “to ensure that this use of the strike is not a hostage-taking”.

A bill from centrist senators could serve as a basis. The latter plans to establish up to 60 days “during which there could be no strike notice”, explained the group leader, Hervé Marseille, for whom “the right to strike is not threatened, but simply overused” in France.

“The French know that the strike is a right”, but “also that working is a duty”, Gabriel Attal reacted on Wednesday. The Prime Minister deplored “a form of habit, every vacation that arrives, to have the announcement of a strike movement” of the railway workers.

An unfavorable opinion

Among the French, weariness sets in. Only 27% of the population views this strike favorably, according to an Elabe survey for BFMTV, published Wednesday. This is the lowest level ever measured for a strike by the institute.

Overall, the movement is also less supported than all the mobilizations organized in recent years. Only Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s electorate looks favorably on this movement (54%).

The RN in support of salary demands

Only 25% of RN voters support it, however. But the far-right party is measured. “I would never blame people who get up early for trying to defend their purchasing power,” explained party vice-president Sébastien Chenu on franceinfo.

His colleague, MP Jean-Philippe Tanguy, also underlined on France Inter that “this strike puts the question of wages at the heart of the news”, while regretting the “counterproductive mode of action” of the unions.

The latter are criticized for this strike movement in public opinion. If 41% of French people believe that the fault is shared, 39% however believe that the unions are responsible. A proportion which climbs in particular among the Macronist electorate (66%), among LR sympathizers (61%), or the RN (50%).
