Nankai Trough Earthquake Emergency Information Issued
Recent seismic activity in the Nankai Trough region has prompted the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to issue an emergency information regarding a potential major earthquake.
The earthquake occurred on August 8, 2024, at around 4:43 PM with a magnitude of 7.1. In response, the JMA issued the “Nankai Trough Earthquake Emergency Information” and later upgraded it to a “Warning of a Major Earthquake.”
While the current information does not guarantee an immediate earthquake, heightened vigilance is advised for the next week.
Areas at Risk and Preparedness Measures
The Special Measures Law for the Promotion of Earthquake Disaster Prevention Measures has designated 1 metropolitan area, 2 urban prefectures, and 26 prefectures spanning 707 cities and towns as promotion areas. While Sakado City is not a designated area, estimates suggest a maximum-class earthquake in the Nankai Trough could produce seismic intensities of 5 weak to strong in the city.
Staying Prepared
- Ensure communication methods with family are established during disasters.
- Check and replenish disaster supplies (food and water for approximately one week).
- Confirm the locations of nearby temporary evacuation sites, shelters, and safe evacuation routes using the Sakado City Disaster Prevention Map.
