Strong Earthquake Shakes Multiple Colombian Cities, Reports Flood In

by time news

The earthquake had a shallow depth (less than 30 kilometers) and its exact location was 7 kilometers from Vegachí.

In addition to the municipality that was the epicenter, Yalí (20 kilometers from the epicenter) and Maceo (24 km) also felt the tremor strongly due to their proximity to the location where the earthquake originated.

But it was not only felt there; residents of municipalities in the Aburrá Valley such as Medellín, Bello, Envigado, Sabaneta, and Itagüí reported feeling the tremor, as well as in areas of other subregions like Rionegro, La Ceja, Remedios, Santa Rosa de Osos, Segovia, among others.

After the quake, social media users sent their reports; some claimed to have felt the tremor for an extended period and even stated that they heard noises during it.

There were also reports from areas in the departments of Santander, Caldas, Boyacá, Norte de Santander, Tolima and even in the capital, Bogotá.

In the last five days, the Colombian Geological Service has reported 114 tremors with a magnitude greater than 2.0 on the Richter scale in the country.

How can I report if I felt a tremor in Colombia?

The Colombian Geological Service invites the public to report the seismic movements they have felt by filling out the “Felt Earthquake” form available on the sismosentido.sgc.gov.co site. This is aimed at helping authorities gather details about these episodes.

“What you report through this simple form helps the Colombian Geological Service to collect information related to the area where the earthquake was felt and the effects it caused, in order to assess seismic intensity,” explains the entity on the “Felt Earthquake” page.

Thanks to this mechanism, the SGC received 367 reports from people who felt the tremor this Thursday, September 12, whose epicenter was in Antioquia.
